How is the texbook used for class?

It is required for copyright reasons. In a face to face classroom, students can easily turn in their written work for grading and so teachers can see how the student is faring. In an online course, sending in work become more difficult. Scanning is time consuming and often produces unreadable work. To solve this, we key in all the problems and set up computer-scoring. It not only solves the dilemma about how to get the student's work, but adds in the bonus of having the computer help with the volunteer's grading load. All the lesson-problems being online and there being lesson recordings can make the textbook seem redundant, but the course is based on a publisher's text, so for copyright reasons we must require it.
