How is the Student Graded?

The student's grades for the course comes from two components: lesson quizzes and projects.

Lesson Quizzes:
Lesson quizzes make up 50% of the student's grade. 

There are five short lessons per week each to be followed by a computer-scored quiz. The lessons quizzes are multiple take which means students may retry questions until they get them correct. Only the highest score goes to the grade book. The questions come from the Notgrass curriculum and are supplemented by questions that we have added to the course to bulk up the question pool and be sure that each concept has a question for it. Each question is set to lose 50% of the point value for a miss. All questions are set up into question pools which means if a student misses the question and uses up both hints so they lose all the point value, they will be able to click the Try Again button and then the redo button to get a new question on the same topic from the question pool. Sometimes the same question will be given again if the question pool is small for that topic. 

Projects make up 50% of the student's grade. 

There are four parts to this course. Some have as little as three weeks and one has up to six weeks. Each part has a required project that must be completed. There are a large number of project to select from and each has a scoring rubric and help on how to complete them. Students may come up with their own project and work with the course instructor to set up a scoring rubric. If approved, it then will be added to the list. 

The reason we felt formal projects were to be required is that the quizzes will only stretch the student as far as factual recall which is a lower level thinking skill. Government is something that should be a life-long part of being a good member of our society. That requires much more than factual recall. It requires the ability to analyze the Constitution, current laws and issues that impact new or changing laws; express opinion; and how to influence others and the government. The projects are designed to develop those skills. This course is based on the Christian worldview, so the content and many projects options will have Biblical analysis as it applies to government and society norms.
